An Ancient African Wisdom for Modern Times

What is Sankofa?

Sankofa is a powerful concept from the Akan people of Ghana that teaches us to learn from the past to build a better future. The word comes from the Twi language, meaning “go back and get” (san = return, ko = go, fa = fetch). It’s guided by the proverb: “It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.”

The Sacred Symbols

Sankofa appears in two main forms:

The Sankofa Bird appears as a bird facing forward with its head turned backward, carrying an egg on its back. The forward body represents progress, the backward head symbolizes learning from the past, and the egg represents precious knowledge to be preserved.

The Heart Symbol is a stylized heart shape that emphasizes the emotional and spiritual connection to our heritage.

Historical Significance

Originally part of the Adinkra symbol system used by the Akan people, Sankofa was woven into daily life through art, governance, and education. During the transatlantic slave trade, enslaved Africans carried this wisdom to the Americas, where it became a tool for cultural preservation and resistance.

Archaeological evidence of its endurance was found in 1991 at the African Burial Ground in Manhattan, where iron tacks on a coffin lid formed what many believe to be a Sankofa symbol.

Modern Applications

Today, Sankofa has experienced a renaissance across multiple areas. Universities use it to ground contemporary learning in historical understanding, while civil rights movements invoke Sankofa to connect past struggles with present activism. Artists like filmmaker Haile Gerima have used Sankofa themes to explore identity and memory, and organizations adopt Sankofa principles to preserve culture while addressing modern challenges.

Why Sankofa Matters Today

In our fast-paced world, Sankofa offers crucial wisdom. It challenges the idea that progress means abandoning the past and suggests solutions to current problems might be found in traditional knowledge. The philosophy emphasizes collective wisdom over individual innovation and provides a framework for healing and understanding in communities affected by historical trauma.
